Does naybody know when the Line Mountain guys post their schedule, or if it is up somewhere?
Their website
http://www.lm4w.org/index.htm
is still '09.
I'd liek to do te hruns this year but need to block off the dates ASAP.

I believe the dates are updated, and actually reflect the 2010 schedule; they just did not change the graphic that says 2009. Also, the races are historically held on the same weekends every year, so the date just increases by 1 most years.
The events you are most likely interested in are the 3.5 Miler, Coal Bucket, and 7 miler.

Good point about the actual dates, they do line up w/ the 2010 calendar.
Those are exactly what I'm targeting, I've been working torwards meeting their (fairly loose) tech requirements. Biggest issues for me are the cage and "no glass", so I'm wokring out my schedule to make sure I'm ready in time.
Do oyu think if I roll down the rear window into the liftgate, that will slip by, or will I have to remove it altogether? That's a huge PITA.

Do you have another vehicle that you drive to work? I know you're always scrounging a tow rig and a trailer, but you keep racing that truck and it's going to get f'd up and I remember you drove that to Happick's house when we went to the Xmas party, but I wasn't sure if that was because of the snow or not LOL

Oh yeah, I have a Protege5 that's my DD. The 4Runner only gets about 4-5k miles a year tops... trips to the hardware store, shitty weather (Mazda has awefull "summer" tires), and summer when it's really nice out and I feel like being topless. Of and of course wheeling trips, I've actually never trailered it (next weekend will be the first time) but that will be changing a lot in the future.

Well I just wonder b/c the rulebook specifically says "must be removed, cannot just be rolled down." So if the inspector is anal, it'd fail... I just don't know how these guys are.
I may just look into leaving it off, or fitting a truck gate in it's place. I just believe it's a PITA to get off, w/ it being wired+ weight of glass, motors in there etc

Go to the junkyard, get a rear gate, break glass out of junkyard gate, install for race, swap back when you get home.

Geeze, when I first wanted to race Line Mt I was checking out their tech and thinking it was going to take a good effort to pass. The more I hear about it I'm thinking if I pass RCROCS, WEROCK, and last years KOH tech I should be able to just show up and run what I brung. right?

Think that would go for the door windows as well?
I may just get tube doors, but right now I'd rather spend the $$ on usefull stuff like a cooler cage.
Is this race hard on rigs? A lot of DNFs? What's typical kinds of breakage?
From the videos (and low-sitting trucks) it dosn't look terribly technical.
There's an ECORS race the following weekend, I'm debating the practicality of even considering both.
Broncolou
05-12-2010, 02:15 PM
It is not that hard. The hardest part is not going too fast. it is easy to get a false sense of security. It is easy to go fast and get crossed up. A lot of people hit trees. Single standard shocks wont cut it either. Dual shocks or a good aftermarket single will be much better. Good cooling and a solid race prep will get you 1/2 way there. The rest is on you running a good race and not overdriving and keeping the rig alive.....

Flat tires and wrapping it around trees seem to be the most of it. Steering seems to take a beating there. The "hill" is a joke to anyone with a locker though I wouldn't go bombing throught the puddle at the bottom. It's also pretty narrow in a lot of places.

I'm planning to race this now as well. I pretty much blew my series placement at the 1st RCROCS so I'm not as concerned about having the rig fully prepped for the 2nd RCROCS event. I'm really looking forward to it, should be great fun to bump tires with everybody in all the different classes on the track. We will all be a little out of our element probably so I'm just planning to have fun, push hard, and finish.

Is ground clearance much of an issue at LM?
From the looks of soms of the rigs in the web pics, I wouldn't think so...?
My Budbuilt near-flat tranfer cross-member got a nice bend in it, causing my transmission to currently rub against the body. I'll have to re-bend it back, but a quick fix would be to replace with the original crossmember, which hangs a bit low.. and also means no tranny skid. Otherwise 33s and a few inches of lift...

No doubler, and I have an auto tranny. IIRC the mounts are different. The skid def. is. Plus mine supposedly has a 1" "lift" built in to match my BL.
I'm also going to try slipping some lift blocks into the engine mounts and see if that straightens it out enough to clear.

Unfortunately, it's looking very unlikely I'll be racing. Aparently Happy and CJ put i na lot of last-minute wrenching at AOI, testing revealed some clearance and cooling problems, they had to fix it 0- got off to a really late start... then the Pimpmobile really had fun at the big hill and hairpins on 225, he had to pull off and chill out.

Well, Happick and CJ broke a wheel about 200 yards from the end of the 1st lap.
See attached - aparently the back half of the rim somehow seperated from the main rim, wheel basically split in half. Never seen that before.
No big deal - except aparently dumabasses hadn't bothered to take a spare with them (even though every other vehicle had at least 1 and often 2 carried), and nobody was allowed to go "in" to help until it was all over at 5. so they sat for awhile, then just walked out.

Thanks to Appalachian Offroad for fabbing new shock hoops on the buggy as well as the rad mount and helping me with other prep for the race.
Everything was working awesome and the new shocks seemed really good. We were holding a good pace, and made several passes on our first lap. A faster truck had come up behind me so I pulled over to let him by. As I re-entered the course another racer came flying around a turn and clipped my front end really bad. Everything appeared OK but 100 yards later the 2nd rock I ran the tire into the wheel gave out.
I don't have a spare tire mount and driving out on a flat has never failed me the course was only 3.5 miles and I am pretty careful to not pop tires. I just wanted to use this as some testing for my new shocks and radiator which worked awesome. I still have a lot to improve on the buggy for racing but it's really hard to stay on top of all the maintenance/prep and do everything. I'll probably be adding a spare tire mount for the RCROCS races.
Thanks to CJ for a hard days work at AOI, an awesome fan wiring job, and being a great co-driver for the weekend. Thanks to Dave for coming out, hanging, and manning the phone at the pits.
Oh yea, and we went the worst way possible in the dark, it sucked big time. The mountain we went over was 1000' of elevation change that was very rapid with hair pin turns. The brakes were fading and smoking at the bottom. Something needs to happen with the transmission to make it lock up so the exhaust brake assits stopping, it just coasts in any gear right now. Really though I just don't ever plan to drive the setup on a grade that steep. The Balduccis gave us a little longer route back that was a cake walk compared to the way we came.
Congrats to Erik Miller for taking 1st place overall for the event!(132 entries) Beat them by 7 seconds on their 40-year home turf his first time there!

Yes, 2.5 triple bypass air shocks, 14" travel, custom built and tuned for Jason Scherer by Fox before KOH 2009. I'm not planning to win KOH or any desert races in the near future and I really dig the external adjustability and simple packaging of the airshock. I saw those sold quick. Was looking at them hard and then then were gone. Really interested in how they work out for you.
I'm kind of perplexed after the race. I juiced them up at the shop and they seemed a little tall after a short ride around but I knew they would settle. Supposedly they were straight off Jason's truck after a week of tuning so I was suspecting the oil levels, valving, and bypass adjustments would be pretty close. When I backed out of the trailer the fronts were 100% compressed by the winch and they all seemed very soft I instantly thought it was going to be a serious problem during the race with them bottoming if they were this soft. So we cranked the upper compression tubes on the rear shocks in a ways. The fronts had the compression tubes cranked pretty tight already.
I was still nervous and thought I needed more oil but we decided to hit the course and see how it handled and just change our pace for what the suspension could handle. I took off at a normal race pace and the shocks seemed to be taking the hits great, I pushed as hard as I could drive and the shocks never bottomed, in fact they had at least an inch of travel that wasn't touched. It seemed to have a lot of rebound but I'm still a total newb at suspension adjustments and I can probably get a much better handle on it when I'm not trying to race 50 other dudes at the same time :)
Here's another perspective of the broken wheel

Man....what a long day.
Good to see everyone out there. Everything was working great come race time but on the first lap we lost the brakes. We had to drive the truck using the tranny to slow us down. That made us drive with caution and put a hurting on our times. We still put down very low times on the first three laps. About halfway through lap 4 we lost electrical power. After an hour under the dash pulling wires and running power to the computer, ignition, fuel pump, etc we had the truck running again. About a half mile from the finish. The truck stalled and wouldn't start. We sat there playing with that for far too long. The post for the solenoid broke off the starter and it was so caked in mud you couldn't see it. We were jumping the posts and the starter would turn but the solenoid woun't engage. Finally got it running again and off we went. Our final lap just killed us. 13th place.

What was your guys 1,2,3 lap times? Also, what took the brakes out?

We don't know what took out the brakes. We ran over a tree going around someone very early on and AJ started complaining about no brakes after that.

I swear if we work hard enough our trucks are going to start staying together. I am really close I nailed it at the last 2 races and placed decent even with 1 or 2 high lap times from mechanical issues. I have every bug I've ever had worked out of it and am very in tune with the condition of every part/bolt. Also have made lots of minor improvements for added reliability. Hopefully at the next one something sucky like a wheel breaking won't happen.

We get a little closer every time to having a good run. We are happy to have finished but would like to have a race where we just drive the truck and not have mechanical issues be.a factor.
The truck now sits at 87 from tire edge to tire edge. There were only one or two spots on the normal trail where we had to bump through. When we had to bypass, we had trouble.

Thanks Matt. It was my first time there and I was impressed with the racing. The course was very tight and technical with no room for error. The conditions were very similar to Rausch minus the big stuff. It was awesome having so many rock guys out there. Looking forward to the next one!

I'm hooked on the Line Mt series. I like everything about it, minus the camping on a hill part:dan1: I will be building something else to be competitive for these races. It's tough and there are a ton of factors that can affect the outcome every time. I want a police siren, I think that you need to be legit to have one though, badass.

I'm not sure if this relates or will help you, but my buddy Ryan runs the 2.5" King Air Shocks. He has told me that the bottom 1" of shaft never goes into the shock body because of an internal bumpstop. Not sure if yours are the same. Just food for thought.

Otter put himself into a tree/rock....something stronger than the high steer arm. I can attest to the hatred he has for sirens. It runs deep and has for a long time!

Our ARB horn had no issues being heard. We had to get physical with one guy's yota. He was not happy about that at all.

Our YJ horn is weak and doesn't like to get wet. Nothing a little bump can't fix thought!

our $8 walmart emergency horn worked like a champ, we only had to bump one guy who couldn't hear us due to really loud exhaust

You have a rig now - just do it.
I'm shooting for the Coal Bucket in July.

I'm shooting for the Coal Bucket in July. nope... not gonna do it. If I race I at least want a chance at being competitive. That just won't happen with this rig... I already made the $1000 mistake of taking the UnRunner and competing in class 3 at rcrocs

Maybe I'm missing something - but after seeing the vehicle running there, I don't se why you wouldn't have a chance at being competitive there. All you seem to need is decent suspension (most of them are leaf sprung truggies like yours), the rest seems to be driving skill.
B/c of the classes it's not like you'd be up against the buggies here, just the other scrubs like... me.

You might do pretty well, big tires let you roll through the rough stuff a lot quicker than most of the vehicles there, don't know til you try.

Honestly if I still had the UnRunner, I'd definitely go for it, but as it is, I don't want to tear up the new rig just yet.
