it is an 18 mile loop, doable in any 4wd from what I understand.
You will need to register your truck with the DNR to obtain a sticker. The fee is $15/year. The application can be found here: http://www.dnr.state.md.us/download/ORV_App_rev._7-04.pdf
You are not required to have 2 vehicles.

Interesting, the Green Ridge page reads like only unregistered ORVs need a permit, any tagged vehicle would be OK.
http://www.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/western/greenridge.html
Green Ridge State Forest offers an 18-mile loop trail located on East Valley and Stafford Roads for off-road vehicles (ORV). All unregistered motorcycles and four wheelers (three-wheel ORV's are not permitted) are required to obtain an identification permit...
But the general ORV page lists "automobile" and "truck" as well:

Yes, tagged vehicles are fine to just go up there and drive around. It's based on the honor system.
I wouldn't want to fly around there though because at certain times there are many atv's and dirtbikes including kids.

whats camping like? Is it private at all or are you on top of each other?

where do you all think buggy's would fall in line? homebuilt 4wd atv? as long as we wear helmets and eye pertection right?

that is my take on it...
Here are some quotes from the DNR page
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources provides trails for off-road vehicles, or ORV's, in Garrett, Potomac, Green Ridge, Savage River and Pocomoke State Forests
An ORV is defined as a motorized vehicle designed for or capable of cross-country travel on land, water, snow, ice, marsh, swampland or other natural terrain. Off-road vehicles include a four-wheel drive or low pressure tire vehicle; an automobile; a truck; a motorcycle and related two-wheel vehicles; an amphibious machine; a ground effect or air cushion vehicle; a snowmobile; and a golf cart.
We definitly fall under the description of what the land is intended for.

I think its more of them wanting to test going fast. there isnt many places to open a buggy up around here for a long period of time on a rough road.

Just a fire road, I know one guy that did it in a neon and another that did it in a minivan.
I did the loop once, better than sitting in front of the tv, but that's about all...scenery has some nice views, no challenge what so ever.
Camping is primitive from what I understand.
We used to go up there in High School to drink beer and use 4x4 to get to some of the camp sites. It's cool to be out in the woods but no challenge.

There are also some roads off the loop that have some decent water crossings too.

The camping is really nice if you don't mind crapping in the woods. Primitive and very secluded. If you have a decent sized group the group sites are awesome, large pavalion and plenty of room.
Rules are slim to none. We've had enormous fires and were as loud as we wanted. The Potomac is close by and that is nice to hang out and drink at.
They also have a shooting range somewhere but I have never gone to it.

X2 on being fun to drive fast, I did it in the 4Runner... BUT x100 on not bein greal safe for hauling ass solely due to there being bikes and ATV on teh same trail.
I *believe* the trail is supposed to be one way, but when I was there we came across ATs going both ways. Coming around one corner, I almost ran a guy over... luckily I'd slowed down, if I'd been cruising it would have been really messy.
If you went on a weekday so there was limited/no traffic, that would help.
If it wasn't a 2.5 hr drive, I'd hit it more often - but from here I oculd be at RC for the same road time.
Oh and Re: permit - i didn'tget one.. but if you're worried (esp buggy guys) I'd think that $18 is pretty cheap insurance, a donation to the Forest Service at least.

green ridge is awesome for a stock 4wd offroading and camping trip, the sites are pretty big only need let them know what site you want and pay for the camping think its $10 a night for 6 people or less ... can go swimming in river...shoot at the range...take trucks for loop or atvs etc

Last time I was there it was nice. If I remember correctly, the loop is not anywhere near the river. Although if you like old stuff, you can find abandoned sections of the c and o canal, old abanonded train tunnels, cemetarys for rail workers. I dont know if you can take a buggy, but the loop is fool of people on atvs and dirt bikes so flyng through there may not be very smart. But its a fun weekend away though.

My wife, 4 month old son and i went up yesterday and did the 18 mile loop. It was pretty dry up there, but we managed to find some mud. We crossed a few other trails that we would like to check out next time around. The Stafford road trail was a rough ride, but had the best views!
